I was explaining our Scotland Outdoors subscriber cover to someone recently, and they had never even heard of the concept. In a nutshell, we design a retail cover, with barcode, cover lines and eye-catching cover image to help us stand out on the crowded newsstand.

People who don’t read magazines often dismiss them as mindless gossip vehicles, confusing one sector of a very diverse market with the market as a whole. They’ve clearly never ventured to the deep end of the periodical pool – and that pool doesn’t get much deeper than Intelligent Life.
In an interesting experiment posted on LiveJournal, last year’s Vogue covers from each of the different editions have been overlayed to surprisingly varied effect. Some are light and airy looking while others – notably the Paris edition – are darker with more apparent typographic variation. It’s interesting to see how the UK edition (above left)
Talking of awards, The Maggies have been announced. Nice to see a couple of Scottish magazines in there – notably, Clash, winning the lifestyle category against titles like Red, She and Good Housekeeping. Well done lads! cost of propecia
